New life emerges in a misty forest once destroyed by fire.
Three years after the fire, soft spring rains invite new life from the ashes. My friend Rich and I hiked through this burn on a rainy morning, surprised at the lushness of green life at the roots of the trees. Many fallen trunks and branches glisten on the ground, but they're gradually being covered by new undergrowth. Fire's a natural part of the forest, and should be managed (not eradicated) if conditions permit. But the new growth does my heart good.
