The gnarled roots of a dead fir still grip the rocks where it lived.
Gnarled into the sharp granite of its foundation, the roots of this monarch of conifers remain a symbol of endurance long after its death. I went hiking in the early spring once, and lost the trail under the snow. I came out onto a lonely bare spot where this tree had grown and died years before, and I remember thinking that perhaps no human being had ever stood on that exact spot before. The name comes from a lost sculpture by Michelangelo; it feels appropriate to this monarch.
