A lone maple stands in mute wintry beauty, offering its network of twigs as a testimony of life in a cold, perfectly square Zen of infinite sky. One winter afternoon I was walking near the lake shore and saw this impressive maple standing on its own. I deliberately placed it off center, removed its neighbors, and made the top of perfect square in emulation of Japanese balance and serenity.
