Crossing frozen Jackson Lake on the ice, I felt that I was approaching a monarch—the Grand Teton, most beautiful and fierce of all the Rocky Mountains. High above the morning shadows on trees of the moraine and the flat ice, the Grand’s northeast face towers higher and higher into heaven, to where the sky is cold and deep. I love this aspect of the mountain, where its peak seems to twist about in the sun, or grip the sky like a fang. Mighty trees cower at its base, ranks of granite climb up aspiring, cold spindrift swirls near the summit; but this mighty peak stand alone among all the mountains of the earth.
