Country folk know the hottest time of day in midsummer isn't noon—it's two hours before evening. The air has been heating all day, the clouds have fled, and the sun pounds down with unmitigated force on the wide rippling waters of Elk Creek, just before it joins the wide Clark Fork river. There on the bank stand wild grasses, waist-high, their leaves soaking in the hot sunlight with the same placid eagerness that their roots soak in the water. The translucent blades fold and twist on each other, reflecting sunlight and casting barred shadows, as close to pointed flames as green plants can be.
